Abstract

We describe, for the first time in Mexico, the agnostid trilobite Euagnostus interstrictus (White), collected from Cambrian strata of
the El Gavilán Formation (Miaolingian, Wuliuan) which is located in the El Sahuaral hill, on the central part of the state of Sonora. A
lower Paleozoic sedimentary sequence is exposed in the study site, represented by the Proveedora, Buelna, Cerro Prieto, and El Gavilán
formations, with a predominant lithology of quartz-arenite, limestone and shale. This sequence is characterized by an abundant and
diverse fossil biota, consisting of ichnofossils, oncolytic algae, sponges, hyolithids, brachiopods, and trilobites. The Cambrian rocks
from the central Sonora area were deposited as part of a thick sedimentary sequence from the western margin of the Laurentia craton
in an outer shelf environment. The cosmopolitan distribution of Euagnostus interstrictus is confirmed, as it is widely distributed in
locations such as northern Australia (Northern Territory and Queensland), Europe (Denmark), United States of America (Utah and
Nevada) and Mexico (Sonora).
